Louis Tomlinson: 'I didn't like the idea of a One Direction hiatus'

Louis Tomlinson has revealed he was the most reluctant member of One Direction to agree to a band hiatus.

The boy band opted to take a break from fans and each other at the end of 2015 and each member has now enjoyed solo success, with Louis admitting he's still surprised he put something out without his pals.

The 25-year-old singer tells the Observer magazine he didn't enjoy the discussions about the group's bleak future together, when his bandmates Liam Payne, Harry Styles, and Niall Horan agreed it was time to take a break.

"It wasn't necessarily a nice conversation," he says. "I could see where it was going.

"In the last year of One Direction I was probably the most confident I ever was. And then it was, 'OK, hiatus!'"

Tomlinson admits he initially worried about what he would do with his time off, admitting he was the last member of the group he thought would have any solo success.

"(Niall is) the most lovely guy in the world," he adds. "Happy-go-lucky Irish, no sense of arrogance. And he's fearless. There are times I've thought, 'I'd have a bit of that'. (Ex-bandmate) Zayn (Malik)... could relate to me on a nerves level. In the first year we were both the least confident. But Zayn has a fantastic voice and for him it was always about owning that.

"Liam always had a good stage presence, same as Harry, they've both got that ownership. Harry comes across very cool. Liam's all about getting the crowd going, doing a bit of dancing... And then there's me."

Louis reveals he planned on writing for other artists until One Direction regrouped, adding, "If you'd asked me a year or 18 months ago, 'Are you going to do anything as a solo artist?' I'd have said, 'Absolutely not'."

The singer made his debut as a solo act at the end of last year (16) with his Steve Aoki collaboration Just Hold On.
